Business Support Services Assistant (Apprentice)

Salary: £10,004.80 pa (£192.40 per week)
Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.00pm (attendance at college is included and paid)
Full-time fixed-term placement
Anticipated commencement date: 1 November 2022

Solent Gateway Ltd (SGL) is a UK-based logistics and commercial port company. In 2016, SGL was awarded a 35-year concession by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to manage, operate and develop the Port, whilst providing the MoD with its required level of service. As part of its plan to develop the port for increased commercial business, there is a major construction project ongoing from Aug 22 – Dec 25 in addition to supporting routine port activity. Activity in the port will increase significantly over the coming years so effective management of the port and all who operate in the port will be essential.

The Business Support Services Assistant reports directly to the Business Support Services Officer and is responsible for providing general administrative support to the Business Support Services Manager and the Senior Leadership Team.

This is an apprenticeship position and you will need to undertake and complete the Level 3 Business Administrator Apprenticeship – 12 to 18 months. A minimum of Maths and English GCSE grade 4/C or equivalent; or the ability to achieve a level 2 functional skill prior to taking the end-point assessment is required.

The Apprenticeship will be in partnership with either Brockenhurst or Totton College – you can choose your preferred college. You will be expected to attend the course’s workshops at the college either weekly or fortnightly/as and when required.

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship a permanent position may be offered, however this cannot be guaranteed.

Main Duties:

  • Provide administrative support to the SGL Managers as required.
  • Receive, record, distribute and despatch all correspondence.
  • Book in all Visitors to the HQ informing Security prior to their visit.
  • Assist in the management of the Uniform Register.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the Purchase Order/Invoice records including the Utilities records.
  • Assist in the maintenance of the SGL Holiday Boards.
  • Undertake filing, photocopying, scanning.
  • Assist the Business Support Services Officer with general administrative tasks.
  • Provide the highest levels of customer service at all times.
  • Complete all relevant documentation as required to the highest standards.
  • Comply with all relevant legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Successfully complete any identified training course deemed necessary for the role.
  • Complete any other tasks commensurate to the role.


  • Able and prepared to gain relevant UK Government Security Clearance
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a small team
  • Wear a uniform and ensure uniform is kept in a clean and serviceable condition
  • Contribute as a team member to ensure the site and port is a safe working environment
  • Provide the highest levels of customer service at all times
  • Essential requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy and have a flexible approach.
  • Able to pass UK Government Security Clearance (min 5 years UK residency).
  • Willing to sign the Official Secrets Act.
  • Desirable requirements
  • Proficient in IT, specifically Microsoft Office i.e. Word, Excel etc.
  • Customer Service experience.
